Sarasota County to host 'Open House' workshop on coastal fringe flood protection

Sarasota, Florida --Sarasota County staff will host an open-house workshop, 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Englewood Sports Complex, 1300 South River Road, Englewood. County staff will present a newly completed study that looks at neighborhood flooding due to excessive rainfall.

Sarasota, Florida-The hurricane season's first storm Tropical Storm Andrea rolls in with a punch but causes minor damage according to Sarasota Emergency Management Officials.

According to damage assessment reports Tropical Storm Andrea's damage includes downed trees, power lines and localized flooding. Some property owners reported damaged fences, roofing shingles stripped from roof tops and broken windows.

Sarasota, Florida -- In anticipation of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which begins on June 1 and runs through Nov. 30, the Sarasota County Office of Emergency Management reminds residents to be prepared and stay alert during the storm season.

Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane says residents can expect another active storm season and need to be prepared.  Knowing information, such as the location of nearby shelters and other basic safety tips, can help individuals withstand the first few hours of a severe storm.

Sarasota, Florida -- Hurricane season is less than three months away and Sarasota County Emergency Management officials say this is the time to learn how to protect your family and property.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management is offering webinars through June 25 with helpful advice. 

The website also contains a Homeowners' Wind Mitigation booklet that explains techniques to avoid wind damage.

Sarasota, Florida -- With the approach of the hurricane season on June 1, the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida's Foundation are offering a series of webinars on what homeowners can do to prepare their homes to withstand high winds.

The webinars are offered through June 25. A list of times and dates is available on the Florida's Foundation website at www.floridasfoundation.org.

High fire danger in Sarasota County

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port reports a "Red Flag Warning" has been issued for Southwest Florida. This means that this area is experiencing severe drought conditions, low humidity and moderate to gusty winds.

On the Keetch-Byrum Index, a scale of wildfire danger from zero (no danger) to 800 (extreme danger), Sarasota County and the City of North Port are in the 550 - 599 range.

Damage assessments under way in wake of Tropical Storm Isaac

Sarasota County, Florida -- County crews are conducting damage assessments and response and relief operations today in the wake of Tropical Storm Isaac.

So far, county creeks and rivers are saturated and there are flood warnings in effect for the Myakka River at Myakka State Park. There also is active flooding along River Road at the Rambler's Rest RV Resort in Venice.

Storm tides and wave action along coastal areas is causing beach erosion and damage to adjacent roads. Manasota Beach Road in the middle of Manasota Key is flooded.
