The Sarasota Herald-Tribune sifted through the information from the U.S. Census Bureau to discover Venice residents have one of the shortest average commutes to work.

Sarasota, Florida - If you plan on heading out Saturday night to a New Year's Eve Celebration, plan for some extra time to get there.

The Florida Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI checkpoint stating at 10 p.m. Saturday at 7900 block of US 41(Tamiami Trail) south of Sarasota. Troopers will be stopping motorists to check if they have valid driver's license and are driving sober.

While on the road if you need FHP's assistance or need to report any accident or someone driving intoxicated you can call *FHP (*347) from any cell phone.

VENICE, FL -- Once per year, Venice City Council members and Sarasota County commissioners meet for a joint session. At the most recent meeting, local leaders pushed specific goals for the completion of the U.S. 41 bypass around Venice.

Venice council members unanimously want the road to have six lanes with intersections operated by traditional traffic signals.

Other plans proposed roundabouts at intersections in lieu of traffic signals, costing roughly $14 million more.

County repairing water main break on Bahia Vista Street

Sarasota, FL -- Sarasota County Utilities is repairing a 10-inch water main break affecting the north side of Bahia Vista Street between Troyer Plaza and McIntosh Road.

Officials estimated that water service was interrupted about two hours while repairs were made around 1:25 p.m. Monday. The service interruption is affecting about 200 customers, including two churches that provide day care services.

Sarasota, Florida -- Siesta Key's main drag can be a drag for pedestrians and the Florida Department of Transportation is proposing some changes to make it safer for pedestrians.

FDOT wants to put in a series of small islands in the center of the road to improve pedestrian safety. You can find out more about the project at a public meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

It takes place at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, located at 5394 Midnight Pass Road.

The meeting runs from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with the state presentation at 6 p.m.

Traffic app helps holiday shoppers

Before you head out to the mall this year for Christmas shopping keep in mind that you can take a look at what traffic looks like before you get on the highway.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has an app for that.

The Florida 511 app now features traffic camera views that show crashes, congestion and other incidents on all of Florida's interstates and roll roads. The app uses the iPhone's GPS tracking to provide you with traffic information within miles of your location.

Sarasota, FL -- It's finally done! On Thursday, Nov. 17, the county will mark the completion of a major two-year extension and improvement project for Honore Avenue from Bee Ridge to Fruitville roads with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The exact location of the ceremony will be on the north side of Webber Street, east of Mapleloft Lane and west of the bridge at 9 a.m.
