Sarasota Police joins Click It or Ticket campaign

Sarasota, Florida -- The 2012 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign kicks off today, May 21 and the Sarasota Police Department is joining the effort to keep motorists safe.

The police department says there will be a zero tolerance for violations. A ticket for a seat belt violation will cost you $116 and a child restraint violation is a $166 fine, along with a moving violation against the driver.

Information session for North Siesta Key Bridge Construction

Siesta Key, Florida -- Construction is scheduled to start in June on the North Siesta Key Bridge.

You can find out more about the project at an open house sponsored by state transportation officials on Tuesday, May 22, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at Siesta Key Chapel, 4615 Gleason Avenue, Sarasota.

The Florida Department of Transportation says the bridge, built in 1972, is in need of rehabilitation, but design plans have not yet been completed.

Venice, Florida -- The FHP, Venice District is conducting a DUI Wolfpack Detail tonight, May 11 at 10 p.m.

The details are set up to remove impaired drivers from the roadways and ultimately enhance the safety of drivers.

There is no exact location of where the detail will be held unlike a checkpoint so drivers should be aware of that tonight.

The FHP would like to remind everyone that *FHP (*347) dialed from any cell phone contacts FHP should you need to report an aggressive driver or require roadside assistance.

Bridge sidewalk closed for construction

Longboat Key, Florida - It's a major project including bridge repairs, painting, and sidewalk reconstruction and officials once again urge caution for both drivers and pedestrians on the Longboat Key Pass Bridge.

This week, the contractor will continue with daytime activities, including sidewalk reconstruction and bridge repair. The sidewalk on the east side of the bridge is closed. Pedestrians are able to use the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.

Corvettes to converge on Circle

Corvettes to converge on Circle

Sarasota, Florida -- St. Armands Circle will glint with chrome and polish on Saturday, May 5, as classic Corvettes go on display.

More than 200 vehicles are expected for the classic Corvette show. The show is in its 13th year and it's the third largest such show in the state.

The show begins at 10 a.m. and an awards ceremony is at 3 p.m.

UPDATE: Accident closes Mound Street southbound

Sarasota, Florida -- UPDATE: Sarasota Police have reopened the southbound portion of Mound Street. The Traffic Unit is still investigating the accident. There is no information on the condition or identity of those involved at this time.

Free bus rides on 'Try Transit Day'

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will offer free rides to all transit users on regular fixed-route or commuter Express buses to celebrate "Try Transit Day" on Thursday, April 19.

On all other days, the standard fare for a single-ride is $1.25 for the regular fixed-route service and $2.50 for the Express service.
