Joint celebration of Commuter Services Day and Try Transit Day

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) and the Commuter Services program of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) are partnering on a joint celebration of Try Transit Day and Commuter Services Day on Thursday, April 25.

On that day, SCAT will offer free rides on all regular fixed-route or commuter Express buses. The standard single-ride fare of $1.25 for the fixed-route service and $2.50 for the Express service will be waived all day.

SCAT Express buses will get Wi-Fi access on March 4

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) has announced riders will have wireless network access on SCAT's eight Express buses -- serving Express routes 100X North Port-Sarasota and 90X North Port-Venice-Sarasota - starting Monday, March 4.

Designed for commuters, the 40-foot Express buses are SCAT's largest buses, with seats for 40 passengers.

Public meetings scheduled on SCAT Transit Development Plan

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will hold four meetings for the public to review and comment on potential changes to SCAT's Transit Development Plan.

The first one is scheduled today, Feb. 26, from 5 - 6 p.m. at the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center, 4000 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice. Three more open house-style public meetings will be held in March.

Topics include future bus routes, planned services and existing services.

City Commission agrees on way fix North Port's roads

North Port, Florida -- The North Port City Commission voted 4-0 to use a capital assessment to secure a bond that will pay for the rehabilitation of 266 miles of roadways in the next three years.

In November, nearly 60 percent of the voters approved a referendum authorizing the City to obtain a $46 million bond to upgrade 266 miles of substandard roads in the City.

New shuttle service for Siesta Beach

Sarasota, Florida -- Love Siesta Beach but tired of hunting for a parking spot? A new shuttle service aims to help.

Siesta Shuttle begins service on Saturday. The shuttle runs from Westfield Southgate Mall to Siesta Key Beach and Village.

The fare is $5 and children under 12 ride free. The shuttle can carry coolers and other beach supplies. The fare covers multiple trips between the mall and beach.

Shuttles will run Monday - Friday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Lane closures on North Port Blvd.

North Port, Florida -- From Feb. 11 through Feb. 28, there will be lane closures to the southbound lane of North Port Boulevard while crews complete construction of a water main between Appomattox Drive and Greenwood Avenue.

This work is being done to improve fire flows, water quality and pressure issues. During construction, flagmen will provide traffic control during the lane closures, maintaining one lane traffic in 500 foot sections that will shift as the project progresses down North Port Boulevard.
