Pass closure during Grand Prix race

Sarasota, Florida - If you plan on boating Sunday, July 7th, you may have to plan a different route. With permission from the United States Coast Guard, Sarasota New Pass will be closed to public vessel traffic.

The area around New Pass intersects with the Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Race Course, so the closure will run from 10 a.m. until the race's conclusion, approximately 3:00 p.m.

Sarasota's Cattlemen Road Project Wins State Award

Sarasota, Florida -- The two year long construction project to extend North Cattlemen Road from Richardson to DeSoto roads has won the "Best in Construction" given by the Florida Transportation Builders Association Inc.

The 2.75 mile long extension of North Cattlemen Road provides motorists with a new north-south alternative to Interstate 74 from University Parkway to Fruitville Road connecting Sarasota and Manatee counties. It also provides access to Nathan Benderson Park and its new world-class rowing facility.

Sarasota, Florida -- For the second time, a cited individual has challenged the constitutionality of the red light camera system used by the City of Sarasota. 

For the second time, the system was upheld.  Earlier today, the Honorable David Denkin denied a motion to dismiss and upheld Sarasota’s red light camera system under Florida Statutes s. 316.0083 (the "Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act") as implemented by our City Code.

Sarasota, Florida -- Police are looking for a black Honda that hit a car and drove away from the scene of the crash.

On June 7, around 10:30 a.m., a black Honda CRV with a white, female driver was traveling northbound on Honore Avenue.

A silver Hyundai Sonata was southbound on Honore Avenue. The black Honda CRV swerved over into the silver Hyundai's lane of travel and the silver Hyundai's left side.

The black Honda CRV continued to drive away from the scene of the crash. No one in the Hyundai Sonata was injured.

Sarasota, Florida --The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its Click It or Ticket campaign, which ran from May 20 to June 2.

During this campaign, Sarasota County deputies wrote 441 citations to motorists who were not wearing seatbelts. “Nighttime drivers and passengers continue to be among those least likely to wear seat belts,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “Consequently, they are also among those most likely to die in motor vehicle crashes and we want to prevent that.”

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is again participating in the National Click It or Ticket Campaign to save lives and remind motorists that the law requires them to buckle up.

From May 20 to June 2, law enforcement agencies throughout the United States are intensifying efforts to enforce seatbelt laws for all motorists around the clock. In Sarasota County, failing to wear a seatbelt will cost drivers $116.

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will use enhanced traffic enforcement over the next few weekends to keep streets safe and take impaired drivers off the road.

Deputies will use “saturation patrols” this weekend and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to look for traffic offenses, motorists driving without a license, those with warrants and drunk drivers.
