County extends citizen feedback on Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County has announced it has extended the opportunity for public input and comments on its draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan via the county's wiki site through Feb. 28. 

A link to the wiki can be found online at the Sarasota County website, www.scgov.net, keyword "Pedestrian".

Free kayak trips in Sarasota Bay

Sarasota, Florida -- Want to explore Sarasota Bay by kayak? The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) is offering six free guided kayak tours of the bay through April.

Upcoming trips include Lido Mangrove Tunnels, Blind Pass,and Lyons and Blackburn Bay.

You need your own kayak, but the tour program is a great way to find out more about plants, wildlife, and habitat in the bay.

South County Family YMCA 2013 Race Series announced

Venice, Florida -- The South County Family YMCA has formed a 2013 race series to reward those who take part in the running and triathlon events the organization hosts next year. 

The series is sponsored by Real Bikes, which has locations in Venice and Englewood.

The South County Family YMCA Race Series is made up of five events, including two sprint triathlons. Three of the events are hosted in Venice, the other two in Englewood.

Dropping in on a class costs $8, but you can get a deal by buying a $40 punch card good for eight classes. 

There is a class scheduled for December 12 from 6 - 7 p.m.

REVOLUTION3 Triathlon and EXPO this weekend

Venice, Florida -- More than 600 athletes will compete for a top spot in Revolution3's end-of-season finale that includes a first prize payout that is one of the largest prize purses in the triathlon sport.

The national competition is expected to attract between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors to south Sarasota County and Charlotte County communities. So far, approximately 600 hotel room nights have been generated. National television stations will film the sporting event, and residents are encouraged to cheer the athletes on as they traverse local roadways.

Blind Pass Beach Youth Fall Fishing Tournament scheduled for Sept. 29

Englewood, Florida -- This Saturday, Sept. 20, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation will host the Blind Pass Beach Youth Fall Fishing Tournament.

Parents can sign their kids under 14 years old up in advance by calling 941-861-5000 and asking for the Englewood Sports Complex.  Registration on the day of the event begins at 8 a.m., with the tournament starting at 8:30 a.m.

Cost is $1 per child and parental supervision is required. Participants need to bring a fishing rod and reel; bait will be provided.
