Festival announces winners of I Love Sarasota Bay photo contest

Sarasota, Florida -- A dozen local residents were honored with custom ribbons at the Sarasota Bay Water Festival Saturday as part of the I Love Sarasota Bay Photo Contest.

First place ribbons in the four age divisions were awarded to Terry Frankford, Sally Twinem, Logan McLeod, and Emma Griffith. The winners also received gift certificates from Whole Foods Market.

Firefighters stir up some heat in Sarasota

Sarasota, Florida - Local firefighters heat things up this Sunday during the Morton's 14th Annual Firehouse Chili Cook-off. They'll compete for the title of "Best Firehouse Chili".

For $5 you can sample the chili and join in the event that features celebrity judges, live entertainment, hot chili, and cold beer.

It's Sunday, October 20th from 2:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m. at Morton's Gourmet Market in Southside Village, 1924 S. Osprey Avenue.

Proceeds benefit the Sarasota Firefighters Benevolent Fund.

STRIDER World Championships return to Sarasota BMX October 11-13

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County's BMX Track, 1590 North Tuttle Ave., Sarasota, will host the 2013 STRIDER World Championships, Oct. 11-13, for racers age 2-5 from around the world.  

The weekend-long event will kick-off Friday, Oct. 11, with registration, followed by opening ceremonies at 5 p.m., and then STRIDER riders taking a few qualifying practice runs around the track to perfect their skills for Saturday's big race. Spectator admission and parking for the event are free. Practice session is $10, and race registration is $25.

Venic Theatre seeks singer, dancers and actors age 50& up for performance troupe

Venice, Florida -- Venice Theatre’s senior outreach troupe, The Silver Foxes, brings its variety shows to venues throughout the county from November to April.  In March they present their annual Follies on the theatre’s MainStage for five performances. Harry Moses, the president of the Silver Foxes, invites performers age 50 and up to join in the fun and audition for the group.

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota's known to have a thriving art scene and next month a book fair will showcase people who paint pictures with their words.

More than 35 local authors will meet with their fans and participate in readings. The festival showcases independent, self-published writers and illustrators.

Community wellness walk to highlight mental health

Community wellness walk to highlight mental health

Sarasota, Florida- Take the first step towards a healthier you by taking part in The Community Wellness Walk Saturday, September 21 at 8 a.m.

The walk is sponsored by members of the Laurel Osprey Venice Nokomis Community Health Action Team. They have planned this walk to raise awareness about mental health and wellness. The free walk is for all ages and is a 1.6 mile walk through Venice. 

Walkers will meet on the grounds of Summit at Venice, 200 Nassau St. N. in Venice. The event is free.  Walkers will travel down Venice Avenue to Esplanade Avenue and back.

SARASOTA, Florida - For the first time in more than 20 years, the World Rowing Championships will be held in the United States. Sarasota, Florida's Nathan Benderson Park (NBP) has been selected by the International Federation of Rowing Associations (FISA) to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
