Longboat Key, Florida -- Does Longboat Key need another cell tower to improve telecommunications on the island? That's what town officials have been trying to find out.

The town hired a consultant to perform a telecommunications study and survey.

Those results have been presented to commissioners and the results are now available on the town's website.

Sarasota Co. website earns 'A' for transparent government

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County website, www.scgov.net, has won a "Sunny Award" as one of the most transparent government websites in the United States. The website scored an "A" transparency grade on Sunshine Review's transparency checklist.

Only 14 of 67 Florida counties received an  "A."

The award is presented by the editors of Sunshine Review.   Only 214 of more than 6,000 government websites ranked by Sunshine Review earned a Sunny Award.

2012-13 enrollment period for Sarasota Virtual School starts March 5

Sarasota County, Fla. -- Sarasota Virtual School (SVS) will begin an enrollment period for the 2012-13 school year on Monday, March 5. Qualified students may enroll through Thursday, June 28.

SVS is a district public school which provides a full-time online learning option for students in grades K-12. Students can access lessons and assignments through the Internet and teachers can communicate with students and parents in various ways.

Science Night to feature students 'Rube Goldberg' inventions

Sarasota, Florida -- Southside Elementary School will host its annual Science Night, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The annual event brings exhibitors together from throughout the community to teach students how science plays a role in their daily lives.

Sarasota, FL -- Utilities customers will see something new included on their City of Sarasota utility bill this month: a matrix bar code. Known as a QR (Quick Response) code, the small black and white square can be scanned with a smartphone to learn more about Sarasota.

"Using a QR code is a great way to market the City," said District 3 City Commissioner Shannon Snyder in a release. "Many people have smartphones now. Just by scanning the code, they'll have quick, easy access to all kinds of information about the City of Sarasota."

Sarasota County has launched a new online site for public access to email between County Commissioners and between the County Administrator and Commissioners. A link to the site isposted on the Sarasota County government home page at www.scgov.net.

Mote opens new bone exhibit

Sarasota, Florida -- Mote Marine Laboratory is known for its study of live marine animals, but a new exhibit there features bones from dolphins and whales.

There's a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Ruth DeLynn Cetacean Osteological Collection on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. Ruth DeLynn, the scientist and volunteer who started the collection more than 30 years ago, will cut the ribbon.

The exhibit holds more than 650 bone specimens from 17 species of dolphin and whale. A national group has called the collection's scientific value unsurpassed.
