Sarasota County school grades released

Sarasota, Florida -- Despite the higher standards of FCAT 2.0, 37 of the 39 Sarasota County traditional and charter elementary and middle schools, or 95 percent, received A or B grades for the 2011-12 school year, according to results released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Education.

Letter grades for school districts are expected to be released Friday. High school grades will be announced later this year.

Sarasota, Florida -- When the school year begins, students at Phillippi Shores Elementary School will have a new and safer sidewalk to use to walk to school.

The Phillippi Shores Elementary School sidewalk project will begin on July 9 and in expected to be substantially complete within 60 days, weather permitting.

The project is being built under the federal Safe Routes to School program administered by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Sarasota School Board member elected to state task force on funding

Sarasota, Florida -- Caroline Zucker, chairwoman of the School Board of Sarasota County, has been appointed by Speaker Dean Cannon of the Florida House of Representatives to serve as a member of the K-12 Public School Facility Funding Task Force.

Zucker, one of only two school board members to serve on the 11-member task force, will represent school boards in small to medium-sized school districts throughout the state, based on student population.

SMS technology teams shine in national competition

Sarasota, Florida -- Two teams of technology students from Sarasota Middle School took second and third place in their categories at the National Technology Student Association Conference June 21-25 in Nashville.

More than 5,000 students from middle schools and high schools from 48 states qualified for the national competition by winning state contests.

City extends dates for registration for free backpacks, supplies

City extends dates for registration for free backpacks, supplies

North Port, Florida -- The City has announced the dates have been extended for families to register their children for free backpacks, school supplies, and workshops during the annual Back to School Resource Fair.

Each year, the City hosts the Fair that helps thousands of local families by providing North Port children with school supplies. This year's event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11.

North Port, Florida -- A City Commission sponsored Student Art show, hosted by the North Port Art Advisory Board, will be debuting artwork from students of Toledo Blade Elementary School at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, July 2.

This art show will be held in the reception area on the second floor of City Hall, 4970 City Hall Boulevard, North Port, Florida.

All residents are welcome to attend this free event. Light refreshments will be served. One or more North Port City Commissioners may be in attendance.

The art will remain on display at City Hall until Sept. 10.

Sarasota schools summer hours

Sarasota schools summer hours

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County School District staff will work four extended days during the summer months in order to reduce the cost of utility bills. 

The county says the district administrative center at the Landings and all other district schools and facilities will be closed on Fridays from June 15 - August 10.

The week of July 2 will be an exception. Offices will be open from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on July 2 - 3 and July 5 - 6. They will be closed July 4.
