Exchange program sends 6 students to Trinity College Dublin

Sarasota, Florida -- This past summer, six rising seniors from Booker High School spent a week at Trinity College Dublin as part of a program sponsored by College for Every Student. The students attended the college in Ireland’s capital city, experiencing the gamut of college life: academic, cultural, social and extra-curricular.

Student-staffed Bistro 502 at SCTI to reopen for lunch

Sarasota, Florida -- Bistro 502, a restaurant staffed by high school and adult students in the Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Program at the Sarasota County Technical Institute, will open its doors to the public for the 2012-13 school year at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18.

The facility will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays throughout the school year, with some exceptions. Bistro 502 is located on the SCTI campus at 4748 Beneva Road.

New College of Florida ranks 5th among Liberal Arts colleges

Sarasota, Florida -- New College of Florida makes U.S. News & World Report's top ten list for Best National Liberal Arts Colleges for the 8th year in a row.

New College is ranked No. 87 among all liberal arts colleges, public and private up seven spots from last year.

New College's students graduate with less debt than most other liberal arts colleges coming in the 11th spot.

USDA official to recognize district's nutrition leadership

Sarasota County, Florida -- On Tuesday, Sept. 11, USDA Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Under Secretary Kevin Concannon will visit Phillippi Shores Elementary School in Sarasota to recognize Sarasota County Schools for improving their school meals and meeting the HealthierUS School Challenge for 22 of their elementary schools.

With 17 Silver and 5 Bronze awards, Sarasota County Schools is helping to improve the school nutrition environment in Florida.

County: Use caution driving near Phillippi Shores Elementary

Sarasota, Florida -- Now that school's back in session, the county is urging motorists to take extra precautions when traveling through streets where sidewalks and other improvements are being constructed near Phillippi Shores Elementary School.

The county says placement of new sidewalks, driveways and drainage structures along sections of Mill Terrace, Shade Avenue, Palm Terrace, Fiesta Drive and School Avenue are expected to continue for several weeks.

Get school shots updated now before school year begins

Sarasota, Florida -- With local schools scheduled to resume on Monday, Aug. 20, Sarasota County public health and school officials want to remind parents to get their child's immunizations updated now.

Parents of children who will be entering schools in Sarasota County for the first time must provide the school office with a completed Florida Certification of Immunization (DH 680).
