Sarasota schools receive rain barrels to recycle storm water

Sarasota, Florida -- Students at 31 Sarasota schools will learn how to recycle storm water using rain barrels.

The schools with garden programs have received rain barrels from UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. The beverage distribution company, Redi-2-DrinQ donated 50 barrels to UF/IFAS.

Elementary schools that received barrels are Alta Vista, Brentwood Elementary, Emma E. Booker Elementary, Gocio, Southeast, Garden Glenallen and Taylor Ranch. Middle schools are McIntosh and Oak Part South. High schools are Riverview, Suncoast Polytechnical, Pine View and Venice.

Sarasota County schools salute veterans in tributes Nov. 6-12

Sarasota County, Florida – Students and staff at Sarasota County public schools will honor military veterans with special activities from Tuesday, Nov. 6, through Monday, Nov. 12.

Several veterans have been invited to schools to participate in events. High school bands, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) color guards and other school groups will participate in parades and other community ceremonies on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11.

Sarasota High students perform "Thriller" Oct. 31

Sarasota, Florida -- Prepared to be thrilled and a little bit scared on Halloween night as Sarasota High School students perform for the fourth consecutive year "Thriller" video by the late Michael Jackson.

The students will stage the dance live on St. Armands Circle on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

After spending hours in makeup and costume preparation, the students will head out into the Circle at 6:30 p.m. for a "zombie walk" where they will gather visitors to the park for their performance.

According to Sarasota County Schools, there are tutor training sessions throughout the county, which equip volunteers with the skills needed to tutor elementary, middle and high school-aged readers.

Some reports show some level of autism exists in two million people in the United States that's nearly one in 88 children. Autism is the third most common developmental disability.

USF Sarasota-Manatee is offering free autism screening, education resources to support healthy living for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Sarasota Schools holds Telephone Town Hall Meeting

Sarasota, Florida -- Parents of Sarasota County students will have the opportunity to ask questions or offer suggestions to a panel of district leaders during a Telephone Town Hall Meeting tonight, Oct. 11.

Parents were notified ahead of time by a message sent out Tuesday evening through the district's Connect-ED parent notification system. The call will be held at 7 p.m.

Venice Performing Arts Center groundbreaking Friday

Venice, Florida -- Venice High School's school auditorium will break ground Friday, Oct. 12 to upgrade the faciltiy to a full-service community performance hall.

The project is a joint venture of the school district and the City with the City contributing $7.5 million of the $15 million price tag. The funds are expected to come from revenue generated by a one-cent city sales tax.

The school district says the new 1,100 seat, 51,000 sq.ft. center -- that will include rooms for drama, band, chorus, and orchestra -- is scheduled to open in 2014.
