Sarasota's New College ranks 7th Best Value Public College Nationwide

Sarasota, Florida -- New College of Florida once again is ranked as offering one of the best college educations for the money.

New College is listed in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine seventh on the list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges for 2012-13. This marks the 10th straight year that New College placed among the nation's top 20 public colleges offering a "stellar" education at an affordable price.

Elementary students donate ‘Shoe Boxes for Seniors’

Sarasota, Florida -- The student council at Gulf Gate Elementary recently contributed 79 shoeboxes filled with gifts to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Shoe Boxes for Seniors project.

The school says the boxes, which will be distributed to needy seniors in nursing homes, are filled with soap, combes, brushes, nail clippers and other health and beauty items, bedroom slippers, magazines and more.

Middle school students design and build model wind farm

Sarasota, Florida -- Students in Engineering Technology classes at Brookside Middle School designed and built miniature windmills for a model wind farm to show how an alternative energy source can help provide electric power, using the knowledge they acquired in school to complete the hands-on project.

Gulf Gate Elementary PTA to hold ‘Flea Market on Wheels’

Sarasota, Florida -- The Gulf Gate Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association is holding a “Flea Market on Wheels” from 8 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Community members can load their vehicles with items to sell, rent a space for $10 and keep the proceeds they make from any sales. The funds go directly to the school’s PTA and are used for enhancements such as scholarships for students to participate in field trips, grants for teachers and playground equipment.

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County School District will host financial aid seminars at eight local high schools in December and January.

The sessions will provide information about financial aid opportunities for college and other postsecondary education.
