Sarasota's Teacher of The Year; Marine Science Teacher

Sarasota, Florida -- Riverview High School's Marine Science teacher Katrin Rudge is named Teacher of the Year for Sarasota County. 

Katrin Rudge is a marine science teacher and director of the Auqascience Program at Riverview. Rudge's program incorporates science and astronomy. She has taught nearly 12 years in Sarasota County.

Sarasota, Florida -- Superintendent Lori White will announce the overall Sarasota County Teacher of the Year on Thursday, March 21. 

It will take place during the annual awards program honoring candidates from schools throughout the county. 

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 1000 Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota. The announcement of the district Teacher of the Year will be sometime after 6 p.m.

Sarasota County, Florida -- When the Baltimore Orioles take on the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday at Ed Smith Stadium on March 14, more than 150 local children will be in the stands after earning a free ticket to the game by participating in the Sarasota County Libraries Big League Reader program.

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota Virtual School has started open enrollment for the 2013-14 school year. The deadline for enrollment is Thursday, July 18.

Sarasota Virtual School is a district public school which provides a full-time online learning option for students in grades K-12.

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Commission has officially proclaimed March 14 as Sarasota County Libraries Big League Reader Day at Ed Smith Stadium.

For the third consecutive year, Sarasota County libraries and the Baltimore Orioles have teamed up to promote reading through the Orioles Big League Reader program.

Children who read three or more books in the month of February will receive a free ticket to the Wednesday, March 14, game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Suncoast Workforce Career Center satellite office to celebrate grand opening

Sarasota, Florida -- On Thursday, March 7, the new Suncoast Workforce Career Center satellite office at the Sarasota County Technical Institute (SCTI) will celebrate it's grand opening at 11 a.m.

The new office will offer services including cover letter and resume writing assistance, skills assessment, computer tutorials, employment opportunities, and one-on-one assistance from certified workforce-development professionals.

The hours of the new satellite office are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
