Sarasota, Florida -- Support musical theater and local community performers by checking out some of the plays the schools of the Sarasota County School District will perform this May.  

On Thursday, may 16 100 Gocio Elementary students will present the musical play "Annie KIDS" at 7 p.m. It will be held in the school cafeteria, the public is welcome and admission is free.

Thursday, May 23, Students of Ashton Elementary will perform the musical play "Disney's Beauty and the Beast Junior." It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.

Sarasota High Choral Department gets superior, prepares for final concert

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota High School Singing Sailors Chamber Choirs competed in the Florida Vocal Association State Concert Performance Assessment and received a "Superior" in all categories in which they competed. 

The full SHS Chamber Choir received one "Superior" and two "Excellent" ratings.

The SHS Choral Department will present the 2013 Final Bow End of the Year Concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. The concert will feature a wide variety of music that will showcase the songs the helped them win so many accolades.

Sarasota Public School Program 1954-1960 Featured in Exhibit

Sarasota, Florida-Sarasota takes a road down memory lane and a closer look at the 5 school buildings and 4 additions that helped shape the Sarasota Public School Program from 1954-1960. The exhibit highlights the buildings' design preceding postwar America. The program was initiated by Phillip Hanson Hiss III who was later elected to the Board of Public Instruction, that later became known as the Sarasota County School Board.

Art exhibit opens at North Port High School

North Port, Florida -- The 2013 Embracing Our Differences exhibit at North Port High School is now open and the exhibit will run until June 2. 

The exhibit will have pieces of artists, writers and students from around the world reflecting their interpretation of the message, “enriching lives through diversity.”

This year, a grant from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation enabled the organization to mark its tenth anniversary with an expansion of the exhibit to Bradenton.

Descendants of Sarasota firefighters are eligible for scholarships

Sarasota, Florida -- Direct descendants of City of Sarasota firefighters are now eligible for a scholarship to attend State College of Florida thanks to the generosity of a Florida-based law firm.  The $25,000 scholarship is funded by Sugarman & Susskind, P.A. in Miami which provides legal counsel for the City of Sarasota Firefighters' Pension Fund.

District to pilot after-school nutrition program

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County School District will pilot an after-school nutrition program at three Sarasota elementary schools beginning Wednesday, May 1. The program, sponsored by the Florida Department of Health in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will be offered at Alta Vista, Emma E. Booker and Gocio elementary schools, with serving times from 3:30-4:15 p.m. These schools have high percentages of students receiving free and reduced-price lunches.
