Sarasota, Fla. -- Alta Vista Elementary School has invited district personnel, local, state and national government leaders, community business leaders and volunteers to read books authored and/or illustrated by an African-American to students from 12:30-3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23.

Elementary students to dine at 2nd Annual "El Restaurante Bay Haven"

Sarasota, Fla. -- In an experience blending language learning, culinary exploration andetiquette, the cafeteria at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus will be transformed into "El Restaurante Bay Haven" on Thursday, Feb. 23.

Between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., all students in grades K-5 will order their lunch in Spanish, food from Mexico and other Latin cultures will be served, and Spanish-speaking parent volunteers will act as waiters.

North Port, FL -- The Heron Creek Community Foundation is having another food drive within Heron Creek Golf and Country Club to collect food for the North Port High School's needy and homeless children.  

The food drive will be held Saturday, Feb.18, 2012.

The collection point will be the Welcome Center at Heron Creek Golf and Country Club between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.heroncreekfoundation.org.

Mote and USF team up for learning

Sarasota, Florida -- With their respective mascots looking on, the leaders of Mote Marine Laboratory and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee signed a new agreement that will results in closer ties between the two organizations.

Through this new agreement, USFSM will complete the build-out of classrooms and teaching laboratories in Mote's Marine Mammal Research and Rehabilitation Center. The arrangement will allow USFSM students and faculty to work closely with Mote researchers.

Science Night to feature students 'Rube Goldberg' inventions

Sarasota, Florida -- Southside Elementary School will host its annual Science Night, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The annual event brings exhibitors together from throughout the community to teach students how science plays a role in their daily lives.

Music teacher wins Sarasota County Teacher of the Year Award

Sarasota County, FL -- Victor Fernandez, a music teacher and orchestra director at Booker Middle School in Sarasota, was named the Teacher of the Year for the Sarasota County School District in a ceremony held Thursday evening.

Teachers, administrators, school board members, sponsors and guests gathered at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota Jan. 26 to celebrate the naming of the district winner from among three finalists and to honor candidates from schools throughout the county.
