USF Sarasota-Manatee Launches International Student Certificate Program

Sarasota, Florida -- Nine students from the Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism in Taiwan arrived in July to participate in a 10-month international student certificate program, as part of USFSM's College of Hospitality and Technology.

This inaugural, self-supporting program was designed by Dr. Cihan Cobanoglu, the dean of the College of Hospitality and Technology, and Dr. Keith Barron, a professor on the CHT faculty.

Master Gardeners partner to give back to special needs students

Sarasota, Florida --The Sarasota County Master Gardeners, a volunteer group working through Sarasota County Extension, has completed a beautification project at the Oak Park School, 7285 Proctor Road, Sarasota. Oak Park School serves more than 300 special needs students.

The newly planted landscape at the entrance and bus drop-offs now includes four large urns filled with snowbush and impatiens, a 48-foot long picket fence backed by podocarpus bushes and fronted with knockout rose bushes. Another entrance has been lined with areca palms.

Booker High alumni to get preview of new Historical Room

Sarasota, Florida -- The rich history of Booker High School and its predecessors will be on display at an invitation-only special preview of the school’s new Historical Room at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 29, in the school’s administration building.

The event will coincide with a reunion of alumni who attended Booker schools from 1935-1970. Ernie Dubose, project manager of the Booker High rebuild, will conduct tours of the room and the campus for graduates and other special guests.

Sarasota, Florida -- The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee's College Scholarship Program awarded more than $60,000 in college scholarships to 31 students from Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Sarasota students learn health & science skills at New College's summer camp

Sarasota, Florida -- Summer camp at New College for nearly three dozen middle school and high school students from Sarasota and Manatee Counties runs from June 9 to June 22.

Students in the PUSH/SUCCESS CAMP will experiment with sea urchins and anemones, kayak on the bay to study ousters and try SCUBA diving. The students will work in the "wet lab" of the College's Pritzker Marine Biology Research Center learning how their health is affected by the health of the coastal environment.

Sarasota FCAT and test scores remain higher than state

Sarasota, Florida -- The percentage of Sarasota County public school students scoring as proficient in the FCAT remains higher than state averages at all grade levels in Mathematics, Science and Reading, according to results released Friday (June 7) by the Florida Department of Education. The results were announced for grades four-10 in Reading, grades four-eight in Mathematics, and grades five and eight in Science.
