More vacation rentals coming to Venice?

More vacation rentals coming to Venice?

VENICE, Fla. -- City leaders could be close to nixing Venice's restriction on vacation rentals.

Currently, Venice caps any property at three short-term rentals per year, but a change in Florida law overrides any local regulation on vacation rentals. That's why some have already filed lawsuits against the city challenging the local rules.

Because of the recent changes, Venice's general manager of development recommends city leaders ditch the cap on vacation rentals.

NORTH PORT, Fla. -- North Port residents could soon see a property tax hike to offset shrinking city revenues.

City commissioners have discussed many ways to cut city spending, including: eliminating Fourth of July fireworks, eliminating animal control officers, and cutting back on various city programs.

After selecting certain cuts, commissioners still need an additional $500,000 in savings to avoid property tax increase. However, homeowners who have seen their property values decline will not be subject to any tax increase.

NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Real estate experts consider a 6-month supply of homes to be a "normal" amount of houses listed for sale. However, North Port's supply has fallen to just over 4 months worth of homes.

The shift suggests the area's real estate market may be rebounding after seeing a huge amount of foreclosures.

North Port home prices have also risen while supply has shrunk. The median home price rose to just over $105,000. This time last year, the median price in the community was just $94,000.

The city commission tentatively voted to increase property taxes for anyone who saw their property values increase or remain unchanged. Those whose property lost value would be exempt from the tax increase. That means more than half of North Port residents would not have to pay the higher taxes.
