Sarasota, Florida -- Back in 1905, Davidella "Davie" Lindsay Worcester was attracted to Bird Key because of its natural beauty and serenity. And that's why she purchased land there and built the key's first mansion called New Edzell Castle.

That historical event is being commemorated with a historical marker during a ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m.

The Sarasota County Historical Commission is hosting the event, which will be held at the entrance to Bird Key on John Ringling Boulevard.

Sarasota, Florida -- Nov. 30 is the last day to pay property taxes with a 4% discount and that day, along with the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, usually brings in quite a crowd at the Sarasota County Tax Collector's Office.

In order to make it easier for taxpayers on Monday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 30, drive-thru service will be available from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the following Tax Collector Service Centers:

Gulf Gate Library moves to Westfield Sarasota Square Mall

Sarasota, Florida -- Patrons of Gulf Gate Library won't be traveling very far for services while a new library is built. A temporary location has been secured at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall.

The County Commission approved a lease agreement on a 20,000-square-foot space at the southernmost end of the mall, adjacent to JCPenny.

The existing Gulf Gate Library is expected to close in December and the new temporary location is projected to open in January 2013.

Venice Performing Arts Center groundbreaking Friday

Venice, Florida -- Venice High School's school auditorium will break ground Friday, Oct. 12 to upgrade the faciltiy to a full-service community performance hall.

The project is a joint venture of the school district and the City with the City contributing $7.5 million of the $15 million price tag. The funds are expected to come from revenue generated by a one-cent city sales tax.

The school district says the new 1,100 seat, 51,000 sq.ft. center -- that will include rooms for drama, band, chorus, and orchestra -- is scheduled to open in 2014.

Sarasota uses solar energy to power county building

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota already uses solar technology to power signs, gates, parking lot lights and traffic designs. The next step is to use solar energy to power a county building.

Sarasota County officials will debut the county's newest solar photovoltaic array at the Sarasota County Operations Center, 1001 Sarasota Center Blvd., at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19. This is the first major solar array powering a county building.

The new 57-kilowatt solar PV system has 224 panels projected to produce 86,194 kW per year, 5-6 percent of the building's power use.
