Love is in the air Valentine's Day in Sarasota

Sarasota, Florida -- Serenade your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. If you are not much of a singer take to the Venice Community Center and hear tenor Maurice LoMonaco serenade you both.

A classically influenced singer/songwriter, LoMonaco brings his expansive repertoire of over 1,000 songs to the stage at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14.

Funding approved for turn lanes at two intersections in North Port

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port has announced it has received the funding needed to construct right turn lanes at two intersections.

The City says they will contract a consulting engineering firm to analyze, design and prepare plans for new turn lanes at Biscayne Drive at U.S. 41 and on Price Boulevard at Biscayne Drive.

Popular beach walks strolling back

Sarasota, Florida -- Nothing like a morning walk on the beach-right? Want some company? Well, the county's popular beach walks are back.

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 6, the county's Sunrise Beach Walks return to Siesta Beach and Nokomis Beach. The walks are a great way to stay in shape, enjoy time with friends, and meet new people.

For a one-time $1 registration fee, you can participate every Wednesday in February and March. And if you complete four beach walks, you can walk away with a free T-shirt.

Work underway to plug water supply wells in Alligator Creek Conservation Area

Venice, Florida -- County officials announced Tuesday, Jan. 22, preliminary work is underway to plug five water supply wells no longer being used in the Alligator Creek Conservation Area in Venice.

Southwest Florida Management District (SWFWMD) rules require the county to plug and abandon wells that are no longer being used.

Red tide continues to plague county beaches

Sarasota, Florida -- It appears Sarasota County residents won't be able to enjoy the waters of area beaches this weekend.

The FWC reported Wednesday medium concentrations of the red tide bloom that has been plaguing the area continues to have a presence. In addition, fish deaths and respiratory irritation continue to be reported in the county south through Lee County.

Sarasota, Florida -- It's something beachgoers and business owners both hate to see. Recent water samples show increasing levels of red tide on several area beaches including Siesta Beach, Nokomis Beach, and Venice Beach.

Gulf Gate Library gets ready for move to Westfield Square Mall

Gulf Gate Library gets ready for move to Westfield Square Mall

Sarasota, Florida -- The Gulf Gate Library will close its doors at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, in anticipation of reopening in the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall, next to J.C. Penney.

The County says the mall location is expected to open on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and will serve as the library's temporary home while a new Gulf Gate Library is built at the Curtiss Avenue site. The new Gulf Gate Library is anticipated to open in 2014.
