Receive a free One Day State Park Pass

North Port, Florida -- Come out for the FDEP South District Open House on March 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Morgan Family Community Center 

The first 200 guests that sign up for Utilities ebilling, reoccurring payments, or automatic bank draft will receive a free Florida State Park Pass!

The park pass is good for a free one time admission to any state park for up to eight people, with the exception of Homosassa Springs & Weeki Wachee where the pass is good for 2 people (expires Dec. 31, 2013).

Sarasota County Libraries Host "Design-A-Card" Contest

Sarasota, Florida- Feeling artistic this month? Then help Sarasota County libraries design new library cards.

As of Valentine's Day, applications for the "Design-A-Card" contest can be found at any county library,or on the library website at www.sclibs.net.

The theme for the card designs is "What my library means to me."

Entries may be submitted at any county library before 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites. 

New shuttle service for Siesta Beach

New shuttle service for Siesta Beach

Sarasota, Florida -- Love Siesta Beach but tired of hunting for a parking spot? A new shuttle service aims to help.

Siesta Shuttle begins service on Saturday. The shuttle runs from Westfield Southgate Mall to Siesta Key Beach and Village.

The fare is $5 and children under 12 ride free. The shuttle can carry coolers and other beach supplies. The fare covers multiple trips between the mall and beach.

Shuttles will run Monday - Friday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

County libraries celebrate Library Lovers Month

Sarasota, Florida -- During February, Sarasota County libraries are celebrating Library Lovers Month by inviting community members to design the next generation of Sarasota County library cards.

"Sarasota County is such a creative community that we thought why not ask our customers what they would like to see on their library card," said Fruitville Library Manager Ann Ivey.

New restrooms slated for North Jetty Beach Park

Sarasota, Florida -- When it's time to go - we all like nice ones; and new restrooms are on the way for North Jetty Beach Park.

Sarasota County Commissioners approved the $1.4 million construction project this week.

The existing 30-year-old restroom building will be replaced with a new facility that will almost double the number of fixtures and include two family restrooms. A family-friendly food concession is also part of the plan, as well as parking lot improvements.

Sarasota County libraries, Baltimore Orioles team up to promote reading

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County libraries and the Baltimore Orioles team up to promote reading through the Orioles Big League Reader program.

Kids who sign up and read three or more books during February receive a grandstand ticket to the Thursday, March 14, game between the Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays at Ed Smith Stadium.

The Baltimore Orioles spring training season begins at Ed Smith Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 23, when the Orioles take on the Minnesota Twins at 1:05 p.m.
