Training sessions offered for public officials

Sarasota, Florida -- The ManaSota League of Cities in conjunction with the Florida League of Cities will host free training sessions for public officials on Florida public records and meetings laws.

ASL Classes held in Sarasota

Venice, Florida -- The Community for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will hold ASL Classes on Tuesdays for 10 weeks. 

These classes will teach participants how to communicate with their deaf child, spouse, relative or friend. 

The classes are ope to all ages as well as families, teenager, college students and adults. 

The classes will take place at the Human Service Center at 1750 17th Street Building J in Sarasota. 

ASL II Classes will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and ASL I Classes will be held from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Feature film "Sunshine State" will be shown at North Port Library

Venice, Florida -- Come to the North Port Library to see a movie that focuses on families growing up in 1930s Florida.

Sunshine State is a John Sayles film about real estate developers who are poised to take over a sleepy Florida island. The film was actually filmed on Amelia Island and stars Jane Alexander, Angela Bassett, Mary Steenburgen and Edie Falco. 

The movie will be shown on Wednesday, August 14 at 5:00 p.m.

Public input sought on Florida comprehensive historical preservation plan

Sarasota, Florida -- State and county staff will host a public input session on Thursday, August 15.

Sarasota on the proposed Florida's Statewide Comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan. The plan has been developed by the Florida Department of State's Division of Historical Resources.

Bay Front Park site of living shoreline project

Sarasota, Florida -- Bay Front Park in downtown Sarasota is getting a new look. The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) and the City are teaming up to complete what's called a "living shoreline" at the location.

Living shorelines provide a natural alternative to hardened sea walls made of concrete, rock and other materials. Those unnatural materials are removed and replaced with a sloping shoreline and Florida-native plants. Besides looking better, a living shoreline also provides a buffer for storm water pollution running into the bay.

Get ready for Newtown community cleanup

Sarasota, Florida -- It's time to clean out the garage and shed, and gather up discarded household items, junk and yard waste.

Sarasota County will hold its annual free community cleanup in the Newtown area of Sarasota from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10. 

Dumpsters will be provided at three intersections for residents:

Sarasota, Florida -- The North Sarasota Library is closed Wednesday, July 31 for air conditioning repairs. 

People can still return their books and patrons are encouraged to use the Selby Library at 1331 First Street.
