Plans for Siesta Key Bridge repair finalized

Sarasota, Florida - After hearing from local elected officials and the public, the Florida Department of Transportation has reached a decision regarding the best time to perform repairs on the Siesta Key Noirth Bridge.

Work on the bridge will begin about a year from now-June 5th, 2012. The project's expected to close one lane of traffic on the bridge for three months during the night time hours.

After hearing from the public, FDOT rejected proposals that called for a closure of the bridge and a detour.

Because of expected heavy traffic, all work will also halt during the 4th of July and Labor Day weekend holidays.

The bridge was built in 1972 and the last time it was closed for major repairs was 1996. In order to keep the bridge safe, FDOT officials say the rusted steel grid must be replaced.

FDOT plans on holding an informational meeting for the public before the work begins next year.
