Over 1,000 participate in final Telephone Town Hall

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port has announced that more than 1,400 residents listened in to the City's fifth Telephone Town Hall meeting on Sept. 19.

During the call, City Commissioner David Garofalo answered questions from about 20 callers and website viewers. The question topics included a City pool, a hospital, cycling and pedestrian safety, property taxes, and more.

"It's mind blowing to think that we can call so many people and reach them at one time," Commissioner Garofalo said. "They can actually take part from their living room."

County Commission to hold 2 public budget hearings

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Commission will hold the first of two public hearings for the proposed millage rates for ad valorem districts and the tentative FY 2013 budget at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center at 4000 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice. The non-ad valorem assessment rates and rolls will be certified at this public hearing.

The second public hearing on these millage rates and the budget will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in the Sarasota County Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota.

Sarasota, Florida -- Connie Mack IV, a GOP contender to unseat two-term Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson in the race for the US Senate, will be at the GOP’s North Sarasota County Victory office this Friday, Aug.10, at 3 p.m., to meet and greet supporters.

A long-term conservative, Mack has represented a southwest Florida district since 2005. He has consistently fought to cut spending and taxes, and reduce public debt.

Sarasota, Florida -- As voting for the August 14 Primary gets under way, Sarasota County voters will be able to drop off their vote-by-mail (absentee) ballots at a secure, drive-up collection booth.

As a convenience to those who choose to vote by mail, Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent will open an express ballot drop-off booth during the eight days of early voting, Saturday, Aug. 4 through Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sarasota County Terrace Building.

Commissioners name new Deputy County Administrator

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County has a new Deputy County Administer. Thomas Harmer has been named to the position by County Administrator Randall Reid. The appointment is conditional pending post offer requirements.

Harmer has 26 years of experience in local government, including almost eight years as city manager of Titusville, where he also was Executive Director of the Community Development Agency. He also had served as Fire Chief and emergency manager in Titusville. Prior to that, he was Deputy Fire Chief in Tallahassee.
