Supervisor of Elections extends voter registration hours

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections (SOE) offices will remain open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, which is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6, 2012 General Election.

Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent says staff will be accepting new voter registrations, as well as address and name changes and signature updates, at the following SOE offices during the extended hours:

Voters urged to check on updated signatures

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent urges all voters to ensure their signatures are up to date with the elections office.

“Signatures are very important in the elections process,” Dent says.  “The signatures on record with the supervisor of elections are used to check the signatures on absentee ballot and provisional ballot certificates and on candidate and initiative petitions.”

Sarasota, Florida -- Supervisor Kathy Dent announced Monday sample ballots for the Nov. 6, 2012 General Election are now available on the supervisor of elections (SOE) website at www.SarasotaVotes.com.

Voters may go to the website and select the “Precinct Finder” icon at the top of the home page or click on the “personalized sample ballot” link in the “News Briefs” section and follow the easy instructions to view a personalized sample ballot.

Town and county joint meeting planned

Longboat Key, Florida -- Town and Sarasota County Commissioners have a chance to talk about common concerns and interests.

A joint meeting has been scheduled for Monday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m., in the Third Floor Think Tank at the Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Boulevard.

Among the issues expected to be discussed are Tourist Development Tax allocations, Bayfront Park Recreation Center plans, and beach renourishment.

No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Advisory board seeks two members

Advisory board seeks two members

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services District Advisory Board is looking for members to serve.

The purpose of this advisory board is to review the business of the respective assessment for the taxing district and to make recommendations to the Sarasota County Commission through the Fire Chief concerning acquisition of property, capital improvements and operations and maintenance within the district.

The board also conducts studies and recommends and requests services and facilities for residents of the district.

Sarasota, Florida -- Residents will have a chance to meet in person candidates seeking offices as state representative or state senator at a Candidate Forum on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Candidates will be on hand to discuss priority issues facing Florida's cities from 9 a.m. to noon at City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
