Sarasota voters elect two new county commissioners

Sarasota, Florida- Sarasota County has two new county commissioners. Christine Robinson and Charles Hines were elected on Tuesday. Robinson will serve a 4 year term she had been appointed by Governor Rick Scott in 2010 to fill a retiring commissioner's seat. Hines is new to the Commission.

The commissioners will be sworn in during a 9am ceremony on November 20 at the in the Commission Chamber.

Sarasota, Florida -- Want to learn more about the county's plans to improve Siesta Beach Park?

You can find out more at a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 13. The presentation will take place at St. Michael the Archangel Church at 5394 Midnight Pass Road. The open-house style event runs from 5-7 p.m.

The event is hosted by Sarasota Public Works and Parks and Recreation and staff from the design and engineering firm will also be on hand to answer questions.

Longboat Key, Florida -- As president of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, Tom Aposporos has championed business on the key since 2009. But the chamber will soon be looking for a new leader.

Aposporos has informed the chamber board that he intends to step down before the end of the year.

Sarasota voters receive misleading info on eligibility in mail

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent says it's been brought to her office's attention that voters have been receiving a letter questioning their citizenship status and eligibility to vote from an entity that is not the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections.

She released the following statement to the media to pass along to voters:

“Drive-thru, drop-off” service offered for vote-by-mail (absentee) voters

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County voters will be able to drop off their vote-by-mail (absentee) ballots at a secure, drive-thru collection booth, as the voting for the November 6 General Election gets under way.

As a convenience to those who choose to vote by mail, Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent will open an express ballot drive-thru, drop-off booth during the eight days of early voting, Saturday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Election Day, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sarasota County Terrace Building.
