Community invited to meeting to discuss possible Solid Waste Transfer Station

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port is hosting a community meeting to gather public input about a possible Solid Waste and Recycling Transfer Station and Environmental Business Park.

The community meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in Room 244 of North Port City Hall, 4970 City Hall Blvd.

At the meeting, the proposed project will be discussed in detail, including goals of the project and the development of site criteria, which will be used in selecting potential locations for the proposed transfer station.

Siesta Beach improvement plan moves forward

Siesta Key, Florida -- The plan to improve Siesta Beach moves forward. The County Commission has authorized staff to complete designs for a $21.5 million project.

The commission also approved a plan to complete the project in just 27 months, instead of over 12 years. It's thought the faster timeline could actually save money, because of the depressed construction prices now.

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County announced during its meeting on Friday, Dec. 7, Commissioner Carolyn J. Mason was elected Chair of the Sarasota County Commission for 2013.

Commissioner Charles D.Hines was elected Vice Chair. Commissioner Joseph A. Barbetta will serve as Pro Tem.

The Commissioners vote to select the positions, which are effective Jan. 1. The Chair presides at Commission meetings.

Sarasota County School Board elects new chair and vice chair

Sarasota, Florida -- On Nov. 20, the School Board of Sarasota County elected Jane Goodwin as chairwoman and Shirley Brown as vice chairwoman for the next 12 months. Chairmanship of the board rotates each November among the five members.

The decisions were made at the School Board’s annual reorganization meeting held before the regular twice-monthly meeting. At the meeting, School Board members Caroline Zucker and Frank Kovach, who were reelected unopposed in June, were sworn in for new four-year terms by Judge Lee Haworth of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court.

County hosts Florida Association of Counties Legislative Conference

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County is hosting the annual Florida Association of Counties Legislative Conference for 2012-13. 

The two-day conference is being held today and Thursday, Nov. 28-29, at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota. County Commission Chair Christine Robinson will give the welcome address at a 5 p.m. reception today.

The themes of the conference are "Putting Florida to Work" and "Keeping Florida Local."

County launches citizen feedback wiki on draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Sarasota County, Florida -- The County is asking for the public's input and comments on its draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan on the county's wiki site.

This citizen feedback tool gives citizens the opportunity to provide input on the topics presented in the plan. The wiki is open for review and comment now; it will close at the end of January 2013.
