Sarasota's top prosecutor to retire in 2012

Sarasota, Florida - Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties' top prosecutor will not be seeking re-election in 2012.

According to the Sarasota Herald Tribune, State Attorney Earl Moreland, 62, says he plans to retire. Moreland reportedly wants to spend more times with his five children and six grandchildren.

Moreland won his first race for State Attorney in 1988 and ran unopposed for the next five elections.

Willie Charles Shaw wins City Commission District 1 seat

Sarasota, FL -- Based on unofficial results for the City Commission District 1 election, Willie Charles Shaw was selected to represent District 1 for the next four years, according to City of Sarasota Public Information Officer Jan Thornburg.  The unofficial election numbers are:  District #1

Town of Longboat Key has new mayor

Longboat Key, Florida - Longboat Key Commissioner Jim Brown now has an additional title - Mayor.  On Monday, commissioners selected Brown as the town's next mayor by a 5-2 vote.

Brown is entering his second term as a commissioner. The outgoing mayor is George Spoil. He served the town as commissioner for six years.

Regulatory Study Presentation (Item 38)

Sarasota County commissioners will discuss a regulatory study of the county prepared by the Leadership Research Institute through the Economic Development Corporation (EDC).

The county commissioners requested the study last year to assist in identifying policies, regulations and practices that could be hindering business development.

Sunshine Week, launched by The Florida Society of Newspaper Editors in 2002 as Sunshine Sunday, is about the public's right to know what its government is doing, and why.

Official election results for Sarasota City Commission seats

Sarasota, FL: Official election results are in for two Sarasota City Commission seats. One runoff race will take place in May.

Following the counting of provisional ballots and an automatic recount required by Florida State Statute in District #2, Paul Caragiulo was declared the winner for District #2 and Shannon Snyder was declared the winner for District #3.  There will be a runoff for the District #1 seat. 

As reported previously, Willie Charles Shaw and Linda Holland will advance to a runoff on May 10, 2011 for the District #1 seat.

The official election numbers are:

Unofficial election results for Sarasota City Commission race

Sarasota, Florida -- Based on unofficial results for the City Commission district election, there will be a runoff for the District #1 seat and a recount for the District #2 seat.  Shannon Snyder was declared the winner for District #3.

An automatic recount was triggered for the District #2 seat, with less than one-half of one percentage point separating the two candidates, Paul Caragiulo and Richard Clapp. 

Provisional ballots will be counted this Thursday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the Supervisor of Elections office, 101 S. Washington Boulevard.  A recount will follow the next day, Friday, March 11 at 9:00 a.m.  The automatic recount is required by State of Florida statute.

Willie Charles Shaw and Linda Holland will advance to a runoff on May 10, 2011 for the District #1 seat.
