SWAT arrests wanted bank robber

Sarasota, Florida -- A man wanted in connection with the robbery of a Sarasota Bank of America was arrested at his apartment by SWAT team members on Jan. 2.

Sarasota County deputies responded to the robbery at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 6500 block of South Tamiami Trail and were quickly able to identify John Samuel Gay as the suspect.

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County announced during its meeting on Friday, Dec. 7, Commissioner Carolyn J. Mason was elected Chair of the Sarasota County Commission for 2013.

Commissioner Charles D.Hines was elected Vice Chair. Commissioner Joseph A. Barbetta will serve as Pro Tem.

The Commissioners vote to select the positions, which are effective Jan. 1. The Chair presides at Commission meetings.

North Port, Florida -- North Port City Manager Jonathan Lewis has been named the 2012 Outstanding Public Administrator by the Suncoast Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.

Sarasota County School Board elects new chair and vice chair

Sarasota, Florida -- On Nov. 20, the School Board of Sarasota County elected Jane Goodwin as chairwoman and Shirley Brown as vice chairwoman for the next 12 months. Chairmanship of the board rotates each November among the five members.

The decisions were made at the School Board’s annual reorganization meeting held before the regular twice-monthly meeting. At the meeting, School Board members Caroline Zucker and Frank Kovach, who were reelected unopposed in June, were sworn in for new four-year terms by Judge Lee Haworth of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court.

County hosts Florida Association of Counties Legislative Conference

County hosts Florida Association of Counties Legislative Conference

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County is hosting the annual Florida Association of Counties Legislative Conference for 2012-13. 

The two-day conference is being held today and Thursday, Nov. 28-29, at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota. County Commission Chair Christine Robinson will give the welcome address at a 5 p.m. reception today.

The themes of the conference are "Putting Florida to Work" and "Keeping Florida Local."
