Sarasota names county building after deputy county administrator

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota's Health & Human Services building has a new name.

County commissioners have named the building after its Deputy County Administrator Bill Little in honor of his 44 years of public service.

The building will now be called, William L. Little Health & Human Services Center. The commission also issued a proclamation declaring Feb. 26 ad "Bill Little Day" in Sarasota County.

Sarasota, Florida- Sarasota County has a new Fire Marshal. 

Rick Fulwider, former Fire Chief for the Venice Fire Department, has accepted the position and will start February 25. 

Fulwider retired from the Venice Fire Department in September 2012 after 21 years.

Sarasota, Florida -- On Feb. 7, teachers at three public schools in Sarasota were surprised when they were revealed as the district's 2013-14 Teachers of the Year finalists by the annual Teacher Tribute Tour.

Superintendent of Schools Lori White, School Board members Jane Goodwin, Shirley Brown and Caroline Zucker and a team of district administrators and past winners congratulated the teachers as their students and peers helped celebrate the event.

Career criminals arrested for shoplifting

Sarasota, Florida -- On Thursday, Feb. 7, two career criminals were arrested for shoplifting thanks in part, police say, to how well-known one of them was to law enforcement.

Sarasota Sheriff's deputies say on Jan. 22, surveillance video from the Marshalls in the 6500 block of South Tamiami Trail showed a man acting as a lookout while a woman put more than $300 worth of clothing into two bags. When security personnel approached the pair as they left the store, the man ran off while the woman shoved security out of the way.

Sarasota resident celebrates 102nd birthday!

Sarasota, Florida -- Today, Feb. 9, is a very special day for one Pines of Sarasota’s resident -- he's turning 102!

Pines of Sarasota is holding a special celebration for Walter Hauck today in his honor.

“Walter is absolutely amazing. He uses only a walker and bops about with a smile on his face and a twinkle n his eye. Walter has many visitors here at Keys. He was an active presence in Sarasota,” explains Kimberly O’Toole, Pines activities director.
