Sarasota Schools to hold job fair for substitute teachers October 25

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County School District will hold a job fair for prospective substitute teachers on Friday October 25.

Because the need for substitutes is greater at some schools, the district has removed the qualification for substitutes at those schools to have Florida teaching certificates. Applicants who are interested in working at these schools must have a bachelor’s degree and be willing to submit to a background check and drug test, as all district applicants must do.

Sheriff Tom Knight promotes Jeff Slapp to Captain

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight promoted Lieutenant Jeff Slapp to Captain on Wednesday. 

Slapp joined the sheriff’s office in 1985, and rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant in 2006. Slapp has served the agency in a number of areas, most recently supervising the Training Section, and is credited with introducing progressive skills and technologies to the training programs agency-wide. Captain Slapp will now bring his management skills to the Public Safety Communications Center.

Students honored for 'Stop the Violence' essays

Sarasota, County -- Florida -- The City Commission will honor students who wrote thought provoking and heartfelt essays during summer vacation about how to ‘Stop the Violence’ in Sarasota.   The recognition will take place Monday, September 16 at 6 p.m. during the Regular City Commission meeting at City Hall, 1565 First Street.  The top essay winners will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Mayor Shannon Snyder and the City Commission.

Sarasota County, Florida -- Keep Sarasota County Beautiful is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Volunteer Awards, which will be announced at its annual recognition dinner in November.

This program recognizes individuals and groups who have made a visible difference and significant contribution toward anti-littering and beautification activities throughout Sarasota County.

Nominations for volunteer awards are due Friday, Oct. 4, by 5 p.m.

Aviation Unit Wins National FLIR Video Award

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was awarded 3rd place in the FLIR Vision Awards presented at the 2013 Airborne Law Enforcement Association annual conference in Orlando.

The FLIR Vision Awards are presented annually to airborne law enforcement teams with the best video of a rescue, apprehension or surveillance mission.

The Florida Bar recognizes William E. Partridge

Sarasota, Florida -- William E. Partridge, who heads the Sarasota law office of Grossman Roth and Partridge, was recently recognized as one of 75 South Florida attorneys who have maintained their credentials as board-certified experts in civil trial or tax law for 30 years. Board certification is the Florida Bar’s highest evaluation of attorneys’ competence and experience in one or more of the 24 areas of law approved by certification by the Supreme Court of Florida. Only about five percent of the state’s 93,000 licensed attorneys receive it—a mere 4,600 attorneys.
