Sarasota leader is one of three state finalists for Principal Leadership award

Sarasota County, Florida -- Governor Rick Scott announced on Monday that Alta Vista Elementary School Principal Barbara Shirley is one of three finalists for the Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership. One statewide Principal of the Year and one Assistant Principal of the Year will be announced in February at the annual Commissioner’s Summit for Principals.

Sarasota, Florida -- Nicholas Pelisek, a junior from Pine View School in Osprey, has been selected to represent the Sarasota County School District as the 2014 Sunshine State Scholar at the statewide celebration to be held Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13-14, 2014, at the Orlando Hilton. If Pelisek is unable to attend, the alternate student is Jacob Hurwitz, a junior at Riverview High School.

Sarasota County, Florida -- The check was in the amount of $5,000 and will go towards the Sarasota Police Foundation, Inc., which supports the Sarasota Police Department.  

The Sarasota Police Foundation, Inc. is a chance for officers and the community to work together to establish and maintain relationships through community policing, training and crime prevention.

Oak Park teacher is FL Council for Exceptional Children Teacher of the Year

Sarasota County, Florida -- An Oak Park School teacher who works with high school and adult students with special needs has been named the Florida Council for Exceptional Children Teacher of the Year. Helen Pastore received the recognition at this year’s state conference Oct. 17-19 in St. Petersburg. She will represent Florida and compete for the national Teacher of the Year title at the CEC Convention and Expo scheduled for April 8-11, 2015, in San Diego.

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight is pleased to announce that two members of his command staff graduated today from The Florida Sheriffs Institute Commanders Academy.

Captain Paul Richard, commander of the Criminal Investigations Bureau, and Captain Jon Goetluck, commander of the Support Services Bureau, have now successfully completed the Academy, held at the Florida Public Safety Institute in Havana, Florida.

Festival announces winners of I Love Sarasota Bay photo contest

Sarasota, Florida -- A dozen local residents were honored with custom ribbons at the Sarasota Bay Water Festival Saturday as part of the I Love Sarasota Bay Photo Contest.

First place ribbons in the four age divisions were awarded to Terry Frankford, Sally Twinem, Logan McLeod, and Emma Griffith. The winners also received gift certificates from Whole Foods Market.

Sarasota Schools to hold job fair for substitute teachers October 25

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County School District will hold a job fair for prospective substitute teachers on Friday October 25.

Because the need for substitutes is greater at some schools, the district has removed the qualification for substitutes at those schools to have Florida teaching certificates. Applicants who are interested in working at these schools must have a bachelor’s degree and be willing to submit to a background check and drug test, as all district applicants must do.
