Sarasota, Florida – According to the City of Sarasota, a dead ficus tree, located near Orange Avenue and the Hudson Bayou bridge, will be removed this Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, prompting lane closures for approximately four hours. Crews will start and stop traffic near 888 South Orange Avenue 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

A staff arborist has been monitoring the decline of the tree for months. The decision was made to remove it before it becomes a safety hazard.

Police arrest 11 'Johns' in prostitution sting

Sarasota, Florida -- Police say 11 men have been arrested in a series of undercover prostitution investigations.

The undercover operations took place at 42nd Street and N. Tamiami Trail and the 600 block of N. Washington Blvd on January 15.

Police say 11 men were arrested, and face a total of 16 criminal charges. A 12th suspect fled from the scene in his vehicle and has so far eluded arrest. Officers have identified him and he also faces two felony driving charges and one misdemeanor charge.

Substitute teacher punches & pushes his way to jail

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested a substitute teacher and charged him with three counts of Child Abuse in connection with an incident at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota.

William Amory, 55, is accused of punching two 7- and 8-year-old boys and pushing a 7-year-old girl during class on January 6th. The students reported the incident to the principal the next day and she notified the Sheriff's Office and the Department of Children and Families.

Officer opens fire on robbery suspect

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota Police say a robbery suspect rammed a police officer with his car.

The suspect was stopped after an armed robbery near U.S. 301 and Martin Luther King Way around 1:00 Friday morning.

Police say he waited until the officer got out of his cruiser, then stepped on the gas, pinning the officer against his car. The officer fired at the suspect, but the man got away.

Deputy terminated for excessive use of force

Sarasota, Florida -- A Sarasota County deputy is out of job, dismissed after an Internal Affairs investigation found he used excessive force to take a 17-year-old girl, a special ed student, into custody.

Law enforcement was called to Cattleman Road and Cattleman Drive in Sarasota December 15, after the 17-year-old ESE student reportedly battered a school bus aide on the ride home.

Deputy Mark Perrin responded to the call. One witness described him as having a "bit of an attitude."

Plane crashes on the beach in Sarasota County

Venice, Florida - Venice Fire Rescue and Police are on the scene of a small plane crash on the beach.

The crash happened around 5:10 p.m. at 15555 Tarpon Center Drive. Police say three adults and one child on the 1967 Beech fixed-wing plane.

All those on board were able to make it out of the crashed plane, but some are reportedly injured. No one was hurt on the ground.

Boy drowns in backyard pool

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy appears to have drowned in his family's swimming pool in Sarasota.

Authorities say Christian Nott's mother was vacuuming inside their home Monday afternoon when she called out for him and he didn't respond. She ran out to the lanai and saw the boy in the pool.

Neighbors and nearby workers ran over when the woman began screaming. Rescuers responded and took the boy by helicopter to a St. Petersburg hospital, where he died.

Deputies say the boy appears to have gotten around a partial gate surrounding the pool and fallen in. His mother told investigators the boy knew how to swim.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
