Sarasota's New College ranks 7th Best Value Public College Nationwide

Sarasota, Florida -- New College of Florida once again is ranked as offering one of the best college educations for the money.

New College is listed in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine seventh on the list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges for 2012-13. This marks the 10th straight year that New College placed among the nation's top 20 public colleges offering a "stellar" education at an affordable price.

Nokomis house fire claims life

Nokomis, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal fire in Nokomis Tuesday evening.

Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department was the first to respond to the house fire around 6:44 p.m. on N. Kenwood Avenue. Upon their arrival, the house was completely engulfed in flames.

Sarasota's Housing Office receives national award

Sarasota's Housing Office receives national award

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota's Office of Housing and Community Development has announced it recently received the National Community Development Association's Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award.

The Housing Office was recognized for its use of Community Development Block Grant funds in the Newtown neighborhood to improve neighborhoods, homes and families' quality of life.

The grants helped the city invest $60.6 million in public money to improve the following 12 projects in the Newtown community:

Vendors sought for 2nd Nature Environmental Festival

North Port, Florida -- The City of North Port is seeking vendors and sponsors for the upcoming 2nd Nature Environmental Festival. The City is also seeking nominations for the Greenest Citizen Award; the winner will be recognized at the festival.

This free festival for the whole family will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park located on 6968 Reistertown Road in the North Port Estates.

County extends citizen feedback on Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County has announced it has extended the opportunity for public input and comments on its draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan via the county's wiki site through Feb. 28.

Bird Key's history to be honored

Bird Key's history to be honored

Sarasota, Florida -- Back in 1905, Davidella "Davie" Lindsay Worcester was attracted to Bird Key because of its natural beauty and serenity. And that's why she purchased land there and built the key's first mansion called New Edzell Castle.

That historical event is being commemorated with a historical marker during a ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m.

The Sarasota County Historical Commission is hosting the event, which will be held at the entrance to Bird Key on John Ringling Boulevard.

Sarasota, Florida -- Michael's On East is celebrating Greek cuisine in its first Epicurean Adventure of the New Year starting Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The three-course Epicurean Adventure dinner menu is $29.95 per person as well as a two-course lunch menu for $18.95 per person. The restaurant also carefully selected wine pairings that are available for $10 per pairing during dinner and $5 during lunch.
