Elementary students donate ‘Shoe Boxes for Seniors’

Sarasota, Florida -- The student council at Gulf Gate Elementary recently contributed 79 shoeboxes filled with gifts to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Shoe Boxes for Seniors project.

The school says the boxes, which will be distributed to needy seniors in nursing homes, are filled with soap, combes, brushes, nail clippers and other health and beauty items, bedroom slippers, magazines and more.

Venice, Florida -- Due to popular demand, the County will offer a final opportunity to exchange traditional holiday decorative light strings for energy-saving light emitting diode (LED) light strings 10 a.m. - noon on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Sarasota County Fire Station #21, 721 Center Road, Venice.

County residents can bring in up to two strands of their old incandescent holiday lights to exchange for an equivalent number of ENERGY STAR qualified LED lights.

Sarasota, Florida -- If your Christmas gift list includes someone who is into the latest technology the Sarasota County libraries may have some gift ideas for you.

Sarasota County libraries are offering a sneak peek into the "Hottest Tech Toys for the Holiday Season" on Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. during a free webinar that will be available on the library website www.sclibs.net.

You will need to register using a valid Sarasota County library.

Commissioners elect chair, vice chair

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County announced during its meeting on Friday, Dec. 7, Commissioner Carolyn J. Mason was elected Chair of the Sarasota County Commission for 2013.

Commissioner Charles D.Hines was elected Vice Chair. Commissioner Joseph A. Barbetta will serve as Pro Tem.

The Commissioners vote to select the positions, which are effective Jan. 1. The Chair presides at Commission meetings.

New Publix set to open

New Publix set to open

Longboat Key, Florida - People on Longboat Key have been Publix deprived for more than six months now, but doors of the new store are about to open.

The new store at the Shoppes of Bay Isles is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. on Thursday, December 13.

The new store is a larger facility than the former Publix, and will employ about 200 people.
