Sarasota considers roundabouts to improve traffic flow

Sarasota, Florida- How traffic flows along US 41 in Sarasota and in downtown may be changing. The city is planning about a dozen roundabouts modeled after the one on Clearwater Beach.

When Sarasota City officials put in a roundabout at 5 points Park in Downtown traffic slowed down.

"It's attractive for the downtown area," says Mary Joe from Sarasota.

Sarasota Police Department builds a home for a veteran

Sarasota, Florida -- Over the weekend the Sarasota Police Department helped build a home for a veteran. 

Sergeant Tia McCants served for more than four years in the Army's language school where she became fluent in Farsi and later completed tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. One day while on convoy, her vehicle was hit by an IED and the blast injured her shoulder and gave her a concussion which left her with the lasting effects of headaches.

Medical marijuana debate hits Sarasota

Sarasota, Florida- Before 400 members of the Sarasota Tiger Bay Club Wednesday, Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight and Attorney John Morgan passionately defended their views on legalizing Medicinal Marijuana.

"This amendment is vague and broad," Sheriff Knight told the group, in opposition of legal prescription pot.

Sarasota County passes designer drug ordinance

Sarasota County, Florida -- The ordinance will create a ban on products such as synthetic marijuana, bath salts and other items designed to mimic the impairing effects of controlled substances.

Sheriff Tom Knight announce that the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed the designer drug ordinance today. This includes products that are intentionally misbranded, as in the case of synthetic marijuana which is often labeled as "incense" and "not intended for human consumption." 

Deputies confiscate 8 horses from Manatee Co. sanctuary

Myakka City, Florida -- Deputies have confiscated eight horses from pieces of land in Myakka City owned by the same person under investigation for alleged animal abuse at a local sanctuary.

This comes after Manatee deputies raided Napier's Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary last week on State Road 64 near Lake Manatee State Park. Deputies rescued 300 animals said to be living in filthy conditions at the Manatee sanctuary.

They also found a shallow grave with the remains of several dogs.

Boy killed in dirt bike race despite wearing protective gear

Sarasota, Florida -- "He was more protected than required," said Ford Snodgrass, president of the Florida Trail Riders about Evan Max.

Despite all the protective gear Evan wore Saturday morning it wasn't enough to save the 7-year-old's life during a sanctioned dirt bike race in Myakka City.

FL coach, seamstress' Olympic costumes dazzle

ELLENTON, Florida (AP) - The talents of a Florida figure skating coach and a seamstress are on display for the world at the Sochi Olympics.

Seamstress Dawn Imperatore and coach Jim Peterson designed and constructed 12 costumes that will be worn by three skating pairs who train at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex in southwest Florida.
