Sarasota brothers steal propellers and kayaks | News
Sarasota, Florida -- Detectives have arrested two brothers who stole a propeller and kayaks.
On August 23, a pair of brothers were caught on camera and arrested for stealing a 35-pound brass boat propeller from The Condominium on the Bay in Sarasota. They took the propeller and sold it to a local recycling plant.
The brothers, Andrew and Spencer Berberich, were each charged with felony burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and felony stealing in stolen property. While Spencer remains behind bars at the Sarasota County Jail, Andrew bonded out.
On September 11 at the Estero River Outfitters in Lee County, eight kayaks, valued at $2,000, were stolen by Andrew Berberich. The victim found some kayaks resembling the ones that were stolen by searching Craigslist.
A witness later met with Andrew Berberich and bought one of the kayaks from Andrew. After the witness realized the kayak was stolen he immediately turned the kayak over to the victim.
A sting was set up where the witness agreed to meet Berberich to buy more kayaks. Berberich arrived in a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, the same car that was seen driving away in the propeller burglary in August. Another stolen kayak was strapped to the top of the car.
Berberich has been charged in the City of Sarasota with felony dealing in stolen property and felony tampering with a witness. He's facing other charges, including larceny grand theft, from the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
