Sarasota County library card is your free ticket to back-to-school savings

Sarasota County, Florida -- September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Sarasota County libraries join with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure all students have the most important school supply of all - a free library card.

A variety of resources are available to anyone who has a library card. Patrons can borrow books and other media, participate in programs, and access services and online information. For students, a library card is a free ticket to a convenient portal for important educational resources such as newspapers, magazines and encyclopedias for online homework help, and a variety of e-books for school or leisure.

"Our library provides all types of students with tools they need to succeed," said Libraries Public Services Manager Andrea Ginsky. "When students participate in exciting and engaging programs, the act of discovery makes learning fun. Resources can be accessed from the library or from home - all with a free library card. Without a doubt, a library card is the most important school supply of all."

Also in September, libraries across Florida are partnering with state parks in celebration of International Literacy Day on Sunday, Sept. 8. To promote literacy as a fundamental value of libraries, admission fees are waived for anyone who shows his or her library card and a book checked out from the library, or donates a new or gently used, family-friendly book at Oscar Scherer Park and most other state parks on that day.

For more information on where to sign up for a library card, visit any Sarasota County library in person or visit the library online at www.scgov.net/library.
