Candidate qualifying for City Commission seats begins next week

Sarasota, FL -- For anyone interested in being a part of the City Commission, the qualifying period is quickly approaching.

The candidate qualifying period for the City Commission elections for the three district seats is next week, starting at noon on Jan. 3 through noon Jan. 7. The qualifying period is two weeks earlier than previous elections due to changes made by the City Commission to comply with Florida election law.

Three district races are being held. Candidates, including those who pre-qualified, must qualify during the time frame next week in order to have their name placed on the ballot on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. To qualify each person must:

• Provide a petition with 25 signatures of registered voters within their district
• Open a campaign account and appoint a treasurer
• Sign a loyalty oath
• Provide a financial disclosure statement
• Submit a $250.40 election assessment fee

The City Commission moved the qualifying period up two weeks to comply with a state law which requires absentee ballots to be sent to military voters no later than 45 days prior to an election. The general election is on March 8. If a runoff is required, it would occur approximately one month later than usual on May 10.
