Bay Front Park site of living shoreline project | News
Sarasota, Florida -- Bay Front Park in downtown Sarasota is getting a new look. The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) and the City are teaming up to complete what's called a "living shoreline" at the location.
Living shorelines provide a natural alternative to hardened sea walls made of concrete, rock and other materials. Those unnatural materials are removed and replaced with a sloping shoreline and Florida-native plants. Besides looking better, a living shoreline also provides a buffer for storm water pollution running into the bay.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District provided funding support for the Bay Front Park project.
A similar project in 2011 helped revamp Herb Dolan Park in Bradenton Beach.
