Descendants of Sarasota firefighters are eligible for scholarships

Sarasota, Florida -- Direct descendants of City of Sarasota firefighters are now eligible for a scholarship to attend State College of Florida thanks to the generosity of a Florida-based law firm.  The $25,000 scholarship is funded by Sugarman & Susskind, P.A. in Miami which provides legal counsel for the City of Sarasota Firefighters' Pension Fund.

Eligible recipients must be directly related to a retired City of Sarasota firefighter who is receiving a pension from the City of Sarasota Firefighters' Pension Fund or who is currently employed by the Sarasota County Fire Department and is a member of the City of Sarasota Firefighters' Pension Fund.  The City of Sarasota Fire Department consolidated with Sarasota County in 1996.

An annual scholarship of up to $2,500 in total for all recipients will be awarded each academic year to a student or students entering State College of Florida or is/are currently enrolled.  Students accepted into or enrolled in a firefighter or paramedic certification program also will be eligible.  The primary criterion for the scholarship award is a demonstration of financial need.
