New College Student Awarded Truman Scholarship

Sarasota, Florida- New College student Michael Long, 21, is awarded the prestigious 2013 Truman Scholarship given to students with a future in public service. Long is one of 62 winners nationwide and the only student to win the award in Florida.

Long was the youngest person elected to chair the Florida Student Association and the youngest to serve on the Florida Board of Governors.  During his first two years, he served as co-president of the New College student government. In 2011 Long stood up against Senator JD Alexander over Fl Polytechnic.

Long receives 30-thousand dollars towards his graduate studies and a 10-week internship in Washington D.C.

Other Truman scholars include Janet Napolitano, Susan Rice and George Stephanopolous.
