Avoid tax penalities- know the due dates

North Port, Florida -- Delinquent tax penalties start in April and the Sarasota Tax Collector has some advice to avoid them.

To avoid a penalty, property tax payments must be made soon. So far, 91.45 percent of the tax roll has been collected, totaling more than $622 million.

"There are many ways to pay your taxes and avoid a penalty," Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates noted.

Customers can pay at SarasotaTaxCollector.com by electronic check, where the money is sent directly from their checking account. "This is an extremely convenient way to pay property taxes and there is no additional fee for this service," she added.

Payments can also be made online by credit card for an additional 2.45 percent fee added by the payment processor. Payments made online or postmarked must be completed by March 31st. However since the deadline falls on a weekend, Florida law allows payments to be made in person on Monday, April 1st.

Anyone wishing to pay taxes in person may do so at the Tax Collector's Service Centers, Monday through Thursday 8:30-5:00 and Friday 8:30-5:30. A 24 hour drop box is also available at the following locations:

  • Downtown Sarasota - Terrace Building, 101 S. Washington Blvd.
  • South Sarasota - West of Palmer Ranch Plaza, 8484 S. Tamiami Trail
  • Venice - Anderson Administration Center, 4000 S. Tamiami Trail

In addition to the above locations, in North Port checks only may be dropped off at the Office of the Supervisor of Elections, 13640 Tamiami Trail in Biscayne Plaza, open 8:30-5:00 (closed for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00).
