Sarasota County officials get sworn in, take action on number of items

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County Commissioners held their first meeting of the year on Jan. 8 and in addition to swearing in county officials they took action on a number of items.

The officials sworn in were Karen Rushing, Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller; Barbara Ford-Coates, Tax Collector; Kathy Dent, Supervisor of Elections; William Furst, Property Appraiser; Ed Brodsky, State Attorney; Tom Knight, Sheriff; and Larry Eger, Public Defender.

Snook Haven concession - Item 5
Commissioners approved a contract with Venice Pier Group Inc., to provide concession services at Snook Haven Park, 5000 E. Venice Ave., Venice. The Venice Pier Group has operated Sharkey's on the Pier in Venice for 25 years.

Solutions to Avoid Red Tide (START) - Item 8
A contract with Solutions to Avoid Red Tide (START) was approved to support research to reduce red tide, provide information and hold events about the problem.

Venetian Walk housing - Item 13
Commissioners approved a contract with the Venice Housing Authority to allocate $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for the development of Phase II Venetian Walk housing on the site of the former Venice Housing Authority's Grove Terrace public housing complex. Phase II will include 51 housing units, with 26 for public housing and 35 low-income tax credit units.

The Sheriff's Office presented a report outlining future facility needs.

Planning Commission appointments - Item 21
Commissioners appointed Philip A. Kellogg and John Ask to serve four-year terms on the Planning Commission.

Lockwood Ridge interconnect force main project - Item 22
Commissioners approved a $4.3 million contract with Westra Construction Corporation to construct the Lockwood Ridge interconnect force main project. The force main would run from Proctor Road to the South Gate master pump station.

Warm Mineral Springs
Commissioners voted not to sell the county's interest in Warm Mineral Springs and to ask the North Port Commission to clarify its position on the springs.
