Sarasota County issues new mowing schedule

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota County has contracted a fourth company for roadside mowing and median maintenance. The county says Natural Designs Landscaping of Palmetto will maintain the North Urban Zone and will begin work Monday, Aug. 13.

The county has restructured its mowing program by dividing the county into four zones and contracting a landscaping company for each one.

Previously, Sarasota had one company doing roadside mowing and median maintenance for all 2,400 acres. County officials say that company "abandoned" its contract in May. County workers tried keeping up with the work load but the resources were not enough. Grass and weeds along medians and road grew several feet high.

One woman, Andrea Rody, of Lakes Sarasota, was struck and killed by a car while she attempted to mow the median in her neighborhood.
