Sarasota Memorial is named among top 5% for patient safety

Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota Memorial Health Care System announced Tuesday it has received HealthGrades’ 2012 Patient Safety Excellence Award which is awarded to the nation's top 5% of hospitals for patient safety.

This is the 9th consecutive year that Sarasota Memorial has received HealthGrades' safety award.

To evaluate patient safety, HealthGrades analyzed millions of hospitalization records from the medicare provider.

The things analyzed in the study are listed include:

Sarasota, Florida -- On Monday, April 30, Wilkinson Elementary students and staff joined parents and community members to participate in Jump Rope for Heart, an activity designed to raise awareness of heart health and raise funds for the American Heart Association.

The two sessions were held in the outdoor physical education area of the campus; one from 9 - 10:30 a.m., for students in grades K-two; and 1 - 2:30 p.m. for students in grades 3 - 5.

Celebrate two years of North Port Drug-Free Youths

North Port, Florida--  According to the Sarasota County Health Department, the North Port Community Health Action Team (CHAT) will host youth-oriented activities for North Port Drug-Free Youth, (North Port D-Fy) in celebration of over 1,000 youths who have pledged to remain drug-free since the program started two years ago.

Anniversary event activities include competitions and games such as dodge ball and bean toss, as well as food and prizes.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 3, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Morgan Center, 6207 West Price Blvd., North Port.

22 Sarasota County schools named healthiest in state

Sarasota County, Florida – According to the Sarasota County School Board, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced that 22 elementary schools in Sarasota County were listed among the state’s “healthiest schools” on Monday, March 26. 

The number of Sarasota schools that won USDA Healthier US School Challenge Awards made up almost half of the 47 schools named statewide.

Sarasota's mobile health services offered at 14 county sites in April

Sarasota, Florida -- If you can't get to a doctor, the doctor will come to you. The Sarasota County Health Department's Health in Motion Medical Unit Staff will provide free and low-cost health services at 14 sites around the county. Beginning in April, Health In Motion services will be provided at the Goodwill Manasota Center North Port, 14809 Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41 near Sumter Boulevard).

The Sarasota County Health Department's Health In Motion Mobile Medical Unit staff will provide free and low-cost health services at 16 sites around the county during March.

They also will be present at three special events:

  • South County Family YMCA Cyclovia Event on Venice Avenue.  

Sunday, March 11 from 10 a.m. -  1 p.m.

  • Sarasota Housing Authority Fair, 1912 N. Orange Ave.,

Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. -  2 p.m.
