North Port, Fla. -- The Sarasota County Health Department has announced that local low-income and uninsured children from five North Port elementary schools will soon be receiving preventive dental care through a three-year $95,000 grant award the department received from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation (BCBSF).

Sarasota, FL -- Sarasota County has issued a boil water advisory to 250 residents in the Aloha mobile home park, located at 3100 Hawthorne St., following repairs to a water main.

While the county said it has no reason to believe drinking water will be contaminated, Florida law requires drinking water providers to issue precautionary boil water advisories to customers affected by pressure losses in water mains.

Sarasota, Florida -- On Saturday, Jan. 21, residents can learn how to keep their homes dry, ventilated, maintained, clean, pest-free, contaminant-free and safe using the principles from the National Center for Healthy Housing during a "Healthy Home" event.

A home in the Newtown community that is in the process of being rehabilitated will be showcased at the event from 10 a.m. to noon at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 34th St., Sarasota.

Sarasota, FL -- A precautionary boil water advisory has been issued after repairs to a water main break in the area of Gateway Avenue and Superior Avenue in Sarasota that interrupted services to approximately 90 Sarasota County Utilities customers.

The break was reported around 8:30 a.m. and service was restored by 11 a.m.

Sarasota County began using automated telephone calls to notify customers in the area of the precautionary boil water advisory.

North Port, FL -- The Sarasota County Health Department will begin a week-long effort to vaccinate local residents as a part of National Influenza Vaccination Week Dec. 4 - 10.

Uninsured children from 6 months to 18 years old can receive free vaccinations through the initiative.

Prescription drug awareness events planned

Prescription drug awareness events planned

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will host two events this week to promote awareness of the prescription drug problem and give citizens an opportunity to remove unused or expired medications from their homes.

On Thursday, the agency will again host the Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) National Candle Light Vigil at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 Beneva Road, Sarasota. The event is in memory of those lost to drug and alcohol related incidents and those suffering from addiction. The service begins at 6:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.
