Prescription drug awareness events planned

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will host two events this week to promote awareness of the prescription drug problem and give citizens an opportunity to remove unused or expired medications from their homes.

On Thursday, the agency will again host the Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) National Candle Light Vigil at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 Beneva Road, Sarasota. The event is in memory of those lost to drug and alcohol related incidents and those suffering from addiction. The service begins at 6:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, the agency will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., to highlight the need to dispose of unneeded prescription medications. The drop boxes are located in Sarasota at 2071 Ringling Boulevard, and in Venice at 4531 State Road 776. The drop boxes are permanent, so in addition to Saturday’s event, medication can be turned in any day during the listed business hours. In Sarasota the boxes are accessible 24-hours a day, and in Venice from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Both locations are open seven days a week.

This year alone, residents have turned in 1,068 pounds of prescription medications to the permanent drop boxes at both Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office locations.
