Suncoast Communities Blood Bank needs platelet donations

Sarasota, Florida -- Suncoast Communities Blood Bank (SCBB) is asking members of the community to donate platelets.

Thousands of patients in the community, ranging from newborn babies to seniors, require platelets every year. Platelet donors with type AB blood are especially vital.  Anyone can receive platelets from an AB donor, and newborns in crisis can only receive platelets from type AB donors.

"Platelets are only viable for five days and the need in our community is tremendous," said Jayne Giroux, Director of Communications for SCBB.  Because platelets have a much shorter shelf life than blood, it is a constant balancing act to keep enough inventory on hospital shelves. "Many people don't know that you can donate platelets every two weeks.  Donors who give a unit of blood every 56 days can also donate platelets, up to 24 times a year."To encourage platelet donation, anyone who gives platelets twice by the end of November, will receive a $25 gift card from one of SCBB's five partner restaurants, which include Anna Maria Oyster Bar, Cosimo's, , Mattison's, Sharky's on the Pier, and Stonewood Grill and Tavern.

The donation process takes approximately 90 minutes, and within days, will be used to treat local patients.  Platelets can be donated at any SCBB donor center.  For a complete list of locations and hours, visit scbb.org. SCBB also has a bloodmobile specially equipped for platelet donations. To schedule a donation or platelet drive, please call 1-866-97-BLOOD, or email, platelets@scbb.org
