If the shoe fits...you're better off than most runners

Sarasota County, Florida -- Many runners are injured or challenged by something quite simple - not having the right footgear. Everything from the tread to the width to the arch affects the alignment of your body as you run, so the right fit is key.

Luckily, the Sarasota County Wellness Coalition is sponsoring a free two-topic seminar, entitled “Knee Injuries– Prevention and Treatment,” followed by “Proper Shoe Fit, Shoe Technologies and Foot Pathologies.” The program, which is open to the public, will take place on Friday, April 1, from noon-1:30 p.m. at Sarasota County Technical Institute, 4748 Beneva Road, Sarasota.

The first speaker is Dr. Gary Shapiro, a renowned orthopedic surgeon and regional leader in sports medicine and the care of athletes for all ages. The second presenter is David Jackson, a certified pedorthist through the Robert M. Palmer M.D. Institute of Biomechanics, and owner and operator of New Balance of Sarasota.

“Knee injuries and ill-fitting footwear may prevent people from engaging in regular physical activity. Our hope is that this seminar will help to educate people of all ages and backgrounds about practical ways to improve their lifestyle,” said Sarasota County Health Department school health supervisor Linda Glover, who also chairs the Sarasota County Wellness Coalition.

The event organizers have applied for continuing education credits for licensed nurses who attend the seminar.

Seating is limited. Anyone interested in attending is asked to R.S.V.P by Wednesday, March 28. For more information or to register for the seminar, please contact Linda Glover at 941-927-9000, ext. 32101 or via email to linda_glover@doh.state.fl.us.
