Commission approves projects to help water quality

Sarasota, Florida - The Sarasota County Commission has awarded construction contracts totaling $5.9 million for improvements to Beach Road drainage and Hudson Bayou water quality.

According to the county, the Beach Road project is designed to protect public health and safety by improving water quality at Siesta Beach. Plans call for improving the stormwater treatment system. The project includes the construction of a new one-acre detention pond. That project should be completed in November.

The goal of the Hudson Bayou project is to treat runoff from a 10.9 square mile urban area before it hits the bayou and eventually Sarasota Bay. Right now that runoff receives little or no treatment. That project is scheduled to be completed in early 2014.
