UPDATE: Precautionary boil water advisory lifted in Beneva Road area

Sarasota, Florida -- UPDATE: Sarasota County has lifted the precautionary boil water notice for the 420 residents affected by the broken water main on section of Beneva Road Sunday.

Officials say bacteriological testing shows water is safe to drink.

The section of Beneva Road from Beneva Road from Sarasota Square Boulevard to U.S. 41 remains closed for repairs while crews work to repair the water main. The roadway is expected to reopen late Thursday, June 14. In the meantime, traffic is being routed south on Sarasota Square Boulevard.

Previous Release:

After an early morning water main break Sunday, water is back on. However, a section of Beneva Road from Sarasota Square Boulevard to U.S. 41 is still closed, and is expected to be closed at least through Thursday, June 14.

Traffic is being routed south on Sarastoa Square Blvd.

The county says it has no reason to believe the drinking water was contaminated but Floruda Law requires a precautionary boil water advisory.

While the advisory is in effect, the over 400 affected customers are advised to boil all tap water intended for drinking, preparation of food, washing of food utensils, making ice, brushing teeth or for first aid, making sure the water is brought to a rolling boil for one minute.

Among those affected were The Springs at Lake Pointe Woods nursing home, the Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods retirement community--including the Inn assisted living facility--and residents of the Pine Tree Acres neighborhood and a number of businesses.

Over the next few days, the county will collect a series of samples in the affected area and analyze them to make sure the drinking water wasn't contaminated by harmful bacteria duing the service interruption.

Customers will be notified by automated telephone call when the boil water advisory has been canceled.
